Setting The Scene

Locations discussed in the narrative...

Before Disclosure (1986-1998):

During the early days of my childhood, before the Disclosure, my family moved every six to twelve months from one small town to another in the state of Montana. To make it harder for hostile parties to identify the people involved in this tale, I have neglected to name any of these towns. Over the course of my childhood, I left the Montana with my father and occasionally with my whole family. In the interest of privacy, I have identified our locations using generalizations. Very occassionally, I discuss a location that held greater import than most for one reason or another (for example, a certain town in which I was repeatedly molested figured prominently in my adult life, and I was forced to deal with some difficult memories as a result); when this occurs in the narrative, I have identified the location using a moniker of some kind, that can later be used to identify the connection.

After Disclosure (1998-2004):

After my father was removed from our home, my family moved to the same town where my mother's parents lived. We moved twice before she remarried, and after that we moved once before I graduated from high school, all within the same town. Rather than identify these locations by street name, as would be common in a normal autobiography, I have named the houses in order to tell them apart. During junior high and high school, I switched schools several times, and went to several youth camps and conventions with my youth group. I have identified them using monikers or memorable descriptors.

The College Years (2004-2006):

My first and second years of college were spent at seperate schools, in seperate states. I have identified them (and all surrounding identifying locations and features) using monikers and descriptors. My first year of college was spent in Montana, and the second in Oregon, where my family moved after I graduated from high school in 2004. During my second year of college, I lived with my family, except for a six month period in the middle of the year during which time I shared an apartment with a roommate in a neighboring town.

Dating & Engagement (2006-2007):

At the end of my second year of college, I accompanied my family back to Montana for a family vacation to see my grandparents and other family and friends. During our two week stay, I went on my first date with Brock. Five weeks after returning home to Oregon, I gave away everything that wouldn't fit into a couple of suitcases, and took a Greyhound bus back to Montana to be near Brock, and we began to date. During that time, and our subsiquent engagement, I stayed with my aunt and later with a family from church. I have identified these locations in the narrative by family name, rather than actual location.

The First Four Years (2007-2011):

After we got married on July 7th, 2007, we moved frequently. Homelessness became an unfortunate part of our early marriage experience, but thanks to the kindness of friends and family, we never spent a night on the street. To identify the various places we lived during this time, I have used both family names (for the times we experienced hospitality) and descriptive monikers (for the times we had our own place). We spent the first year and a half of our marriage in Montana, and then moved to Nebraska where we lived until the fall of our third year of marriage, at which point we moved to the Chicago area of Illinois.
